Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative Important Reminder
Important Reminder:
Additional changes to the list of accepted documents one can use when traveling by land or sea under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), are scheduled to take effect June 1, 2009. According to US Customs and Border Protection, the WHTI “establishes document requirements for travel into the United States from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.”
Currently, individuals who enter US land and sea ports of entry need to provide government issued ID and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate. However, as of June 1, 2009, individuals will be required to present only passports or other WHTI-compliant documents. For a list of these documents, click here.
We encourage individuals who plan on traveling by land or sea between the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean to begin obtaining WHTI-compliant documents before the new regulations take effect. For more information, visit the CBP’s website on WHTI by clicking here.
