IMPORTANT NOTICE: Scam Aimed at Non-Residents
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is advising individuals to be alert to a scam in the form of e-mails or other correspondence targeting non-residents who have a source of income from the United States. The scam sends false e-mails or letters claiming to be from the IRS to unsuspecting individuals, in an attempt to trick them into giving their personal and financial information to the scammer. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has also recently issued a warning.
Please be alert to this scam and to similar others to avoid being the victim of identity theft or other fraud. The IRS is advising individuals who suspect that they received a suspicious e-mail or other correspondence to report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) by calling 1-800-366-4484.
