Early Thoughts on Comprehensive Immigration Reform

I am an optimist and a realist.  These two ideologies don’t always work together.  In the case of CIR (Comprehensive Immigration Reform) this might be a problem.  The optimist in me hopes that getting a proposal out there will spawn debate and maybe we will finally have the change we need to help the millions of people the US has abandoned in their fight for a better life.  The realist in me thinks if Congress and Obama can’t get their pet projects approved, then this is a long shot at best.  Even more then that is what I see happening on the committees trying to garner more support for CIR.  We debate not whether we want CIR but the details of the proposal.  When we do this (at this stage) we do the work of the anti-CIR (ant-immigrant lobby) for them.  At this stage we should be garnering support even if there is a provision we don’t like.  If we are not prepared to do that, then we need to abandon CIR and go to a piece by piece approach.  One where we can debate each and every provision.  I hope for CIR but as I said I am an optimist and a realist.  It should be an interesting few months to say the least.
