Could this be the end of 287(g)?
I can hope can’t I? “New Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has ordered a broad review of immigration enforcement policies, including 287(g). A report released last week by Justice Strategies offers arguments for eliminating the program.” NAM (March 3, 2009). 287(g) is the program that allows local law enforcement organizations to partner with federal agencies. What was originally intended to be a way for local agencies to get involved in the prevention of serious crimes has become a joke.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio from Arizona may be the worst offenders. He wastes dollars as he focuses on immigrants. Instead of focusing on real crime he parades people down the street in order to publicly humiliate them and thinks this is what he should be doing. He is so outrageous Fox gave him a reality series.
Thankfully tomorrow Wednesday, March 4th at 2 pm EST at 311 Cannon House Office Building, the House Homeland Security will hold a hearing: ‘Examing 287(g): The Role of State and Local Law Enforcement in Immigration Law.’ See this link which provides background on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s 287(g) agreement and suggests questions for ICE and DHS representatives.
Let’s keep hoping that this program finally is put to bed, and Sheriff Joe is finally put out to pasture.
