Congratulations to Mike Quigley

Today, Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley won the Democrat Primary for the seat vacated by Rahm Emanuel, the Illinois 5th District.  This seat has been a democrat stronghold for a long time, making his likely victory in the actual election a foregone conclusion.  None the less when reviewing the candidates I was surprised to see how different his stated views on immigration are from those of the Republican primary winner, Rosanna Pulido.  Click here for the results.

On Commissioner Quigley’s web site he talks about guaranteeing services and benefits to immigrants, working toward Comprehensive Reform, and specifically working with Congressman Luis Gutierrez.  All things he should be lauded for, and I look forward to finding a way to work with him to accomplish these goals.  On her web site she focuses on blaming illegal immigration for the ills of society, specifically crime and economic problems.

I was initially surprised because this type of anti-immigrant position actually lost people their seats in close races this past November.  So why would she espouse this rhetoric and even use ridiculous unsubstantiated figures?  Well guess what?  Ms. Pulido was a founder of the Illinois Minutemen, a wing of the immigration restriction group that patrolled the U.S.-Mexico border in 2006 and 2007.

Therefore I say, Congratulations Commissioner Quigley.  I look forward to having you as my Congressman.   Also thank you to Ms. Pulido for keeping the immigration conversation alive.  There is a lot of work still to do and your extremist ideas should make it easier for Reform to arrive.
