Finding a Sense of Who We Are…
The editorial board of the NY Times has gotten it right again. I find myself saying this over and over again. In this mornings edition they talk about how we can figure out who we are if we bring rationality back to the immigration discussion. It is time to stand up and admit that the policies of the last 8 years are unfair, unjust and wrong. Just last week the Attorney General went so far as to overturn the established principle that immigrants who were represented were entitled to reasonable representation. As a parting shot the AG said immigrants do not have the constitutional right to counsel and may have no recourse for bad counsel. Since they might be deported as a result, they already have limited recourse through the system of malpractice, etc. Now the government says they may not even be able to overturn the error. Who are we? Do we want to be known as cruel, and unfeeling. Are we so self absorbed that we do not remember that our principles are only challenged by the hard cases…
I hope there are others who agree and we not only find out who we are, but we remember who we are supposed to be.
