Right to Attorneys & Good Advice
The Attorney General is reviewing the rights of immigrants to effective assistance of counsel. The right and protection that it affords is much needed, since courts have gone so far as to say that in some cases as an immigrant, even if you get bad advice and follow it, you may not have a right to challenge the results that come from this. Well yesterday the American Bar Association sent the Attorney General a letter stating that they “consider the right to effective assistance of counsel in immigration matters to be of the utmost importance.” Its nice to see people speak up for the rights of immigrants.
This comes in the same week that the News & Observer in NC reminds us of how Notaries in this country take advantage of immigrants. Sometimes its because notaries are important legal authorities in other countries so there are cultural understanding issues of what they are doing in this country. But once there is a problem there is also the fear of reporting these often important local community figures. It is important to remember that if you have been harmed you should report the people so they can not harm anyone else. Information on reporting in Illinois; For other states.
